Collaborations - Gilbert & George

Gilbert and George are contemporary artists who have been collaborating together for over forty years. They are famous for their films and ‘living sculptures.’ They place themselves, their thoughts and their feelings in the centre of their art; however their works capture human experiences. They believe that everything can be a subject matter of their work, and have always addressed social issues, taboos and artistic conventions. Their film format is usually a large grid, a square or rectangular picture broken into sections that develop into a field of signs and images. From the beginning Gilbert and George adopted the slogan ‘Art for All’, intending to communicate beyond the narrow confines of the art world.

PLEASE CHECK THE COURSE OUTLINE FOR PRESENTATION DATES

Hi Everyone,

You will need to check the final presentation dates as our Library Research Class is next week - 15th SEPT - so we have moved the classes back one week. It gives you all an extra week!

Could everyone also check that they are presenting in the week they nominated.

Thanks!

A.

Yinka Shonibare - Art and Identity

Eleanor Heartney has placed Yinka Shonibare in the chapter of Art and Globalism, however I feel his work also relates to themes of identity that seem to link with the ideas of race and class. His works are humorous in the way they subvert these stereotypes within a historical context, as well as subverting this notion and fallacy of only having one identity. Many of his works explore the idea of being in a transitional state or being between two identities, two cultures, and feel like an investigation into the multicultural world in which we live.
